Former Federal President Joachim Gauck will take on the patronage of the 7Türme+ foundation, which is currently being established. The goal of this initiative is the permanent preservation of the five historic old town churches, which form the world-famous silhouette of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.
The Hanseatic city of Lübeck, with its impressive silhouette of towers and historic buildings, is not only a tourist magnet but also a living testament to a rich past. However, behind the historical facades lies an urgent challenge: the preservation of the cultural heritage that shapes the identity of this city.
In an exclusive interview, former Federal President Joachim Gauck expressed his deep connection to Lübeck and his determined commitment to the protection of the old town churches. "I gladly take on the patronage for 7Türme+, not only out of North German solidarity from one Hanseatic city to another but also because I am fascinated, both as a citizen and as a former Federal President, when individuals, foundations, public authorities, politically engaged people, and members of the churches come together to achieve a great work."
He emphasized the importance of civic engagement and praised the long-standing campaign "I Want to See Seven Towers," which has been conducted with great passion. "By taking on the patronage for 7Türme+, I am also acknowledging the impressive activity of the support campaign," said Joachim Gauck. "The campaign has succeeded in winning over citizens with heart and mind: This is our city, this is World Heritage, and this is our home, and we feel responsible for it."
The Old Town Churches of Lübeck, with their seven towers, are not only architectural masterpieces but also significant symbols of the city's history and culture. However, preserving these historic buildings requires ongoing financial support and concerted efforts that the church can no longer manage on its own. 7Türme+ will begin its work as a non-profit civil-law foundation with an endowment fund. Its main task will be the acquisition of financial resources ("Fundraising").
Considering the current and future challenges, Joachim Gauck, as the future patron, calls on everyone to join forces to preserve the Old Town churches. "We must not allow Lübeck's historic heritage to fall into decay," Gauck appeals. "It is our responsibility to preserve and care for this heritage for future generations."
Support from civil society is crucial in this endeavour, Gauck continued. "It is important that we recognize that preserving our cultural heritage is not just a matter of financing but also of shared responsibility." Hence, Gauck made an appeal to the people of Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, and all of Germany: "We need people who believe in success and have the perseverance to see it through."
