St. Marien in Lübeck: Interior Renovation - Heating Renewal

The underfloor heating in St. Marien has been defective for some time and as a consequence the church cannot be properly heated. There is also a lack of a comprehensive ventilation concept in the nearly 800-year-old building.

This has serious effects on the artworks inside of St. Marien as they suffer from mould growth and salt deposits. Urgent action is needed to prevent further damage to the historically significant artworks.

Measures

After the renovation, a water-based underfloor heating system plus additional "heating stations" will provide an even heat distribution. Additionally, electric heaters will be installed on the window sills at strategically favorable points. Automatically controlled opening wings on the windows will handle climate-stabilizing ventilation.

The measures therefore include:

  • Renewal of the heating system
  • Installation of a climate-stabilizing ventilation system

Good to Know

St. Marien will be particularly sustainable: Heat generation will, as much as possible, rely on renewable energies. A ground-source heat pump together with a pellet system is planned, which will be housed in an adjacent building.

The Church of St. Marien is supplied via a district heating pipeline.
